All dal dishes are seen as the “poor man’s food”. Why? Because dal, like pasta, goes a long way to feed a family. But you know what? they are sooooo tasty, hearty and warming on a cold winter’s day or when under the weather. To me it’s a crime to eat dal without Indian pickles (achar) on the side. If don’t have any then pickled onions make a yummy alternative – pickles and dal – a match made in heaven.

Great with rice or flatbreads. Serve garnished with chopped coriander, chilli, ginger juliennes and sprinkled with garam masala to taste (available to buy soon).

Reheat from frozen in microwave or in the pan on the stove
